The Psychedelic Society of First Responders and Emergency Workers is active and thriving on FaceBook!  Like and follow our page for first responders and emergency workers (i.e. paramedic, firefighter, police, military, nurse, doctor, crisis worker, counsellor, etc.) that use, or support the use of cannabis and psychedelics; for healing, or enhancing quality of life. This page is both for evidence-based education, harm reduction, and community support networks. Clinical research has shown that cannabis and psychedelics can be powerful tools for healing, when used correctly.

Click here to watch my lesson to First Responders on effectively managing patients who are experiencing acute psychosis or an emotional crisis.  I presented this as Continuing Medical Education for Paramedics in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  It outlines two intense calls that I attended where we were able to use psychological harm reduction and crisis intervention techniques to help patients experiencing two different forms of altered states.  These techniques prevented police from having to use lethal force, allowing us to get the best outcomes possible for the patients involved.  Feel free to use this information or the techniques I teach in your daily life to help others!

After an intense month with a car accident and a stressful work injury, I update everyone on how I have been coping with these and the growing pressure on the front lines of the pandemic.  Learning to identify your responses to stress can be an effective tool for overcoming challenging times.  How does stress activate certain thought patterns you have?  How does stress store as tension or discomfort in your body?  Learning your symptoms and how to work through them can push your from distress to optimal function  in your window of tolerance.  I also talk about monitoring your mental health and self-care during the Covid-19 pandemic.  The collective stress, trauma, and uncertainty we are all feeling can make isolation a catalyst for psychological crisis, so it is important to maintain social connection and wellness routines to avoid struggling with your mental health.  Finally, do not use cannabis to escape or avoid emotional discomfort.  Cannabis is most effective when used as a reward for psychological discipline, enhance self-care, or as a tool to work through overwhelming symptoms.  To avoid any negative impacts from cannabis its best to balance your use with other methods of self care to allow your cannabinoid system to avoid depending on cannabis as its primary means of activation.  Regulated sleep, nutrition, and exercise help in doing this!
